Student Bar Admissions and Practice Certification

Student Registration

Some states, including Alabama, encourage students to register with the bar while they are students. Students may be able to reduce or avoid some fees by applying early to the Alabama State Bar. To learn more about registering with the Alabama State Bar see the following link:

Student Practice Certification

Many states have a rule that allows third-year law students to represent clients if they are supervised by a practicing lawyer. This practice certification is sometimes colloquially referred to as a “practice card;” however, Alabama does not issue an actual, physical card.

Students who are interested in applying for practice certification in Alabama must first register as a law student with the Alabama State Bar. Once registered, students must complete the forms available at the Alabama State Bar site for law student internships.

Students working in placements outside the Law School should contact the Registrar’s Office for assistance and work with their supervising attorney to complete the forms. Students enrolled in a Law School Clinic should contact the Law School Clinic office for this process.
