Terry McCarthy is a partner at Lightfoot, Franklin & White in Birmingham, Alabama, where he practices primarily in complex litigation, appellate advocacy, and evidence. He has served as lead counsel and appellate counsel in matters in more than 25 states. He has been recognized by The Best Lawyers in America for several years in the areas of Appellate Practice, Commercial Litigation, and Insurance Law.
McCarthy is a co-author, with Charles Gamble and Robert Goodwin, of the seventh edition of McElroy’s Alabama Evidence and Gamble’s Alabama Rules of Evidence, the leading treatises on Alabama evidence law. He serves on the Alabama Supreme Court Advisory Committee to the Alabama Rules of Evidence and has written several scholarly articles on evidence issues. He regularly teaches continuing legal education courses on evidence.
McCarthy received his J.D. from the University of Alabama School of Law, and he also holds master’s and doctoral degrees in education. He previously served as a university administrator and has taught evidence and procedural courses at the University of Alabama School of Law, Birmingham School of Law, and Cumberland School of Law. He has received numerous teaching awards from the law schools where he has taught. His teaching emphasizes the practical application of evidence law to litigation and trial practice.
