Finch Fellowship Initiative

The Finch Initiative, established by the University of Alabama School of Law, provides law students with immersive experiences in rural Alabama communities. Named after Atticus Finch from “To Kill a Mockingbird,” with the permission of Harper Lee’s estate, the program places second- and third-year students with local judges for part of the summer. The initiative began in 2017 in Andalusia, Alabama, and has now expanded to four different locations in Alabama. This initiative aims to expose students to the rewarding and impactful nature of small-town legal practice, fostering an appreciation for this often-overlooked career path.

Participants, known as Finch Fellows, gain firsthand experience in various legal proceedings, observing and engaging in diverse matters from adoptions to mental competency hearings. Through discussions with judges and involvement in community projects, they contribute to local legal education and support. Overall, the Finch Initiative highlights the personal and professional rewards of rural legal practice, inspiring students to consider careers in small-town law where they can make significant contributions to society.
