Alabama Law’s Summer Scholars Program Returns for its Second Year
In June, the University of Alabama School of Law hosted its Summer Scholars program-a unique opportunity that introduces the study of law to currently enrolled college students from backgrounds that have been historically underrepresented within the legal profession. Made possible through the generous support of Derrick (’03) and Tamesha Mills, Shane Sears (’99), Mike Brock (’84), Penny Davis (’78), John Saxon (’77), Richard (’93) and Heather Brock (’93), and the University of Alabama System’s McMahon-Pleiad Prize, the Summer Scholars program returned for its second year. The Honorable Spencer T. Bachus III (’72) was nominated by President Joe Biden to the board of directors of the Export Import Bank of the United States.
Danielle Blevins (’12) was named Senior Attorney for Privacy Law for the U.S. Department of Energy.
Scott Bowers, IV (’07) joined Baker Donelson’s Raleigh, North Carolina office.
Tiffany J. deGruy (‘08) has been named co-chair of the Women in Litigation Joint CLE Conference hosted by the American Bar Association’s litigation section.
The Honorable Gerald M. Martin (’92) was appointed to the Mississippi Commission on a Uniform Youth Court System and Procedures.
Beth W. Murphy (‘98) was named Chief Legal Officer of Grange Insurance effective January 2024.
Neena Speer (’17) was named co-facilitator for an accelerator program with Urban Impact Birmingham under the “Be BHM” initiative. She was also honored in DC for her service over the past six years to the HBCU PRE-LAW Summit and Fair, and she has served as the executive producer for the movie “Hard” which will be premiering in New York on October 21.

Faculty Notes
Professor Heather Elliott spoke at a conference, The Jurisprudential Legacy of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, at the University of New Hampshire Franklin Pierce School of Law on September 22, 2023. The conference highlights a book of the same title, published by the NYU Press in May 2023 and edited by Ryan Vacca and Ann Bartow. Prof. Elliott’s chapter, co-written with Elizabeth Porter of the University of Washington School of Law, focuses on Justice Ginsburg’s civil procedure opinions and the Justice’s recognition that procedure has important implications for federalism and separation of powers.
Professor Mirit Eyal-Cohen presented her paper titled Tax Incentives for Investment Crowdfunding at The Future of Startup Finance: A Symposium on Investment Crowdfunding hosted by the Silicon Flatirons center at Colorado Law. The paper will also be published in the University of Colorado Technology Law Review.
Professor Susan Hamill was quoted in California Fast Food Restaurants Take Advantage of Wage Loophole in Capital & Main and The Fee Trap: Why Alabama’s Local Governments Can’t Shake Fines and Charges in the Alabama Reflector.
Professor Shalini Ray published an essay in the American Journal of Law and Equality, a peer-reviewed journal founded in 2020 by three Harvard Law School professors. She was also invited to contribute an essay for the American Constitution Society’s 2021-22 Supreme Court Review, and her piece is forthcoming.
Professor Clare Ryan presented her research, titled Anti-Democratic Civil Society: Third Party Interventions before the European Court of Human Rights, at the Max Plank Institute’s Symposium on Legal Infrastructures of Democracy. Professor Ryan participated virtually in the conference, which was held on September 7-8th in Frankfurt, Germany.
