A Message From Dean Brandon
Dear fellow alumni,
As we near the end of 2022, I find myself reflecting on the many ways you’ve contributed to the lives of students and faculty in the School of Law. I’m enormously grateful to you for your unfailing acts of kindness, support, and generosity. You’ve participated in online panels and forums. You’ve spoken with prospective students by phone, virtually, and in-person. You’ve actively participated in programs for the Career Services Office. You’ve mentored our students and recent graduates. For all of these examples of support (and more), I thank you.
As you contemplate additional ways to give back, I encourage you to consider contributing to the Alabama Law Alumni Society. Our Alumni Society makes it possible to provide resources for student scholarships, for advocacy teams, for critical technology, for lectures and symposia, and for a host of other purposes that are central to our mission to train the very best lawyers for the 21st century.

Alabama Law Ranked Top 3 Among Nation’s Best Value Law Schools
This month, preLaw Magazine ranked the University of Alabama School of Law as the #3 Best Value Law School in the U.S. This annual list identifies those law schools across the nation that provide a first-rate education while keeping students’ costs down. Pre-Law does this by assessing factors such as tuition and fees, employment success, bar passage rates, and average graduate debt load. Richard F. Allen (’73) wrote the featured article in The Summer 2022 Volume 27 edition of On Point: The Journal of Army History.
Cynthia L. Almond (’87)secured her first full term in the Alabama House of Representatives District 63 seat.
Katie B. Britt (’13) was elected to the United States Senate.
Caitlin E. Cobb (’17) was named to the 2022-2023 class of the Alabama Leadership Initiative.
David Foley (’09) was appointed as an Administrative Law Judge with the Social Security Administration in Dallas.
Richmond B. Gunter II (’19) was named to the 2022-2023 class of the Alabama Leadership Initiative.
Russell Henry (’03) was promoted to the rank of Colonel in the Marine Corps.
Michael “Mike” L. Jones Jr. (’92) has been appointed by Secretary of State-Elect Wes Allen as General Counsel for his office.
Gerald M. Martin (’92) was elected as chair of the Conference of Chancery Court Judges.
Brooks L. Mason (’21) joined Kutak Rock in Omaha as an Associate Attorney in the firm’s tax credits group.
Alisha R. May (’97) was appointed by Governor Kay Ivey to serve as a Circuit Judge in the domestic relations division of the Alabama 10th Judicial Circuit.
Whitney S. McElroy (’11) joined Burr & Forman LLP in Nashville as Counsel.
Danielle Mashburn-Myrick (’13) has been selected for The American Bankruptcy Institute’s 2022 40 under 40.
Lynlee Wells Palmer (’01) has joined Jackson Lewis P.C. as a principal in the firm’s Birmingham office.
Charles W. Prueter (’12) joined Fortif Law Partners LLC in Birmingham as a Partner.
Jay Saxon (’11) joined Allen & Overy LLP in New York as an Associate in the banking and projects group.
Nicholas “Nick” J. Wilson (’15) was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives.
Gifts
Bradley Arant Boult & Cummings, LLP donated $8,000 to the Alabama Law Alumni Society on behalf of the firm’s Alabama Law graduates.
Julia Smeds Roth (’77) pledged $250,000 to create the Julia Smeds Roth Endowed Law Scholarship.
Faculty Notes
Professor Paul Horwitz recently published a review of two articles-The Rhetorical Power of the Supreme Court and The Supreme Court and the People: Communicating Decisions to the Public-in Jotwell. Professor Horwitz is a co-editor of Jotwell’s constitutional law section.
Professor Shalini Ray presented a work in progress at a faculty colloquium at Cardozo School of Law in New York City. She also began her three-year term as a Council Member for the ABA Administrative Law and Regulatory Practice Section, and she moderated a session on “Power in the Administrative State,” a workshop series created by Prof. Brian D. Feinstein at the Wharton School.
Professor Joyce Vance coauthored Mar-a-Lago Model Prosecution Memo in Just Security-an online forum for rigorous analysis of national security, foreign policy, and rights, based at the Reiss Center on Law and Security at New York University School of Law.
