Joseph Colquitt

Professor Emeritus of Law

Professor Colquitt received his B.S. degree in 1967 and his J.D. in 1970 from The University of Alabama. While in law school, he served as editor of the Alabama Law Review. In 1987, he received the M.J.S. degree from the University of Nevada in Reno, Nevada. Judge Colquitt was a circuit judge of the Sixth Judicial Circuit of Alabama from 1971 to 1991. During that time, he served four terms as presiding judge. He also served on the Executive Committee of the Alabama Circuit Judges Association. From 1974 to 1991, Professor Colquitt was an adjunct faculty member at The University of Alabama School of Law. He joined the Law School on a permanent basis in 1991. In addition to his appointment here, he is a faculty member at the National Judicial College in Reno, Nevada. He regularly teaches at judicial colleges and seminars, and has taught at the Russian Legal Academy in Moscow. Professor Colquitt was a member of the drafting committee for Alabama rules of evidence. He edited Alabama Pattern Jury Instructions – Criminal and is the author of Alabama Law of Evidence and Alabama Criminal Trial Practice Forms. In 1992 he received the American Judicature Society’s Herbert Harley Award. In 1999, Judge Colquitt was the recipient of the Howell T. Heflin award for Judicial Excellence. Professor Colquitt teaches Criminal Law, Capital Litigation, Criminal Procedure, and Criminal Sentencing.
