Professor Stein joined the Law School Faculty in June 1984 and took emeritus status in May 2011. He received his J.D. degree from Duke University, where he was elected to Order of the Coif, and he received a B.A. degree from New College in Sarasota, Florida. He clerked for the Honorable Gerald Bard Tjoflat on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
Professor Stein taught in a number of areas at the law school, especially in the areas of Federal taxation, employee benefits, labor law, and poverty law. His research has explored various aspects of the delivery of retirement and health benefits to American workers. He has authored or co-authored three books and numerous articles on retirement, social insurance, tax, and financial security.
Professor Stein has testified before Congress on fifteen occasions; has served on the Department of Labor’s ERISA Advisory Counsel and the General Accounting Office’s Expert Panel on Retirement Security; was a delegate at the 2002 and 2006 White House Summit on Retirement Savings; was a member of the Academic Advisory Panel to the Joint Committee on Taxation; and has served as Chair of the Employee Benefits Section of the American Association of Law Schools and as Secretary of the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Social Insurance. He was also Treasurer of the Society of American Law Teachers and was President of the University of Alabama Faculty Senate.
Since retiring from the law school, Professor Stein has served as Senior Policy Advisor for the Pension Rights Center in Washington, D.C., and has taught at the Earle Mack School of Law at Drexel University.
